Especialista en Cirugía General (Costa Rica) — inscripción ante el Colegio de Médicos

Latin America · CR · $99, the same everywhere

How you become a specialist here

Examination required to register

Costa Rica is the Central American exception: registering a specialty with the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos runs through a theoretical and practical competency examination before a qualifying jury appointed by the governing board. It is not an exit board in the usual sense — it is tied to the registration procedure, and bears mainly on qualifications obtained abroad — but it is a real examination and it has to be prepared.

So what is a question bank for, here? For the years before the title, and for the evaluations inside them. Where there is no exit examination the pressure moves into residency — the ward round, the rotation assessment, the case you are asked to defend — and it is the same general surgery either way. The bank is also what you sit down with before a certification examination abroad, and before recertifying.

Checked against the body itself on 1 September 2026. Procedures change; if this no longer matches what you were asked for, write and tell us.

No weighted breakdown for this examination, and why

Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica does not publish a general surgery syllabus we have been able to obtain, so this page shows no domains and no percentages. Common questions about this examination

Is there a national general surgery examination in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is the Central American exception: registering a specialty with the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos runs through a theoretical and practical competency examination before a qualifying jury appointed by the governing board. It is not an exit board in the usual sense — it is tied to the registration procedure, and bears mainly on qualifications obtained abroad — but it is a real examination and it has to be prepared.

How is a general surgeon certified in Costa Rica?

Through the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica. Registering the specialty involves an examination, which is why it is worth preparing. We checked this with the body itself on 1 September 2026, and we publish the date so that it is obvious when it ages.

How do you prepare the registration examination in Costa Rica?

With the specialty syllabus, which is the same one: 5,000 single-best-answer questions across the whole of general surgery, each with the reasoning for every option, plus an oral simulator for the practical part. We do not publish the qualifying jury's question count or duration because we do not hold its official document.

What does it cost from Costa Rica?

One payment of $99 for 180 days, the same from wherever you pay — there is no country pricing. It covers the whole bank, the oral simulator and the timed mock papers. Nothing renews and no card is kept on file afterwards. Fifty questions are free with an account, so you can judge the level before paying.

Every answer above is taken from the examining body’s own published document, not from our reading of it.
